Chamonix 2009 Day 1

Saturday 15 August
Flew to Geneva and used ChamExpress to get us from the airport to Cham. They are excellent, making it a point of honour to collect everyone on time from their respective locations. First thing we did on arrival at the Chalet was go out, and buy a 14 day Chamonix lift pass. Fantastic value, giving hands-free access onto nearly all the cable cars and chairlifts, mountain trams and trains in the area. Tried out the Aiguille du Midi option.

Jim at the Plan du Midi
Fun to be sitting at altitude only hours after leaving dark and rainy England. We wanted to recce the Aiguille de L’M, as we had an idea to climb it.

We could see the descent route, but later spoke to someone who had done it, saying there was a massive amount of stonefall coming down the descent, and would really warn against doing it. Walked along to the Montenvers railway station

watched the cable car going down onto the glacier,

and had a beer in the restaurant

before taking the train back to Chamonix. The Jacuzzi was being tested when we returned and found to be excellent.
