Cuillin ridge 2005, Rained Off

Wednesday June 1 2005
Caravan, Glen Brittle Camp Site
Rain starts soon after we go to bed, that milky look on the horizon far out to the islands was a change in the weather as we feared. In the morning it is blowing and very wet. We hunker down for a long caravan session and Jim decides to phone our friends who are in a cottage at Dunvegan. They invite us for tea, and Mark kindly comes to pick us up. It carries on raining as we eat mussels picked from the beach and play Jenga. We sleep in a lovely spare room looking out to the loch, towards Maclouds Tables if only we could have seen them.

The weather is so bad that it looks as though there will be no chance of doing anything about a ridge traverse on this visit. It has continued raining incessantly since yesterday. We got two buses back to the caravan this morning and now we are lying on the benches, looking out at the sodden, increasingly devastated campsite and the pale grey horizon with no sign of mountains or distance.
Now it is 7pm and still raining. The little stream beside us has broken its banks and spread out across the path to the hills and the toilets. I go paddling in it and the warden says it is the worst she has ever seen it. We decide to pack our bags.
