Right in the centre of Todmorden you can walk into a forgotten wilderness between the viaduct and the River Calder. Just sneak round the back of the market, over the canalised tributary of the Calder just by the point at which a branch of it goes underground to flow beneath the Town Hall, take the left hand fork of the track ahead, and very soon you are in amongst the trees looking back at the town like a stranger. The track leads up to a derelict farmhouse with vans nearby, beyond which is more wild land. Cutting down towards the river, you come to a row of garages, each individual and redolent with its own strange history.
