One of the few truly ‘Alpine’ via ferrata of the Dolomites requiring good glacier crossing experience, particularly in mixed weather conditions. The route takes the west ridge up the Marmolada to Punta Penia, the highest peak in the Dolomites at 3343m.
The route climbs to a shoulder and then via many ladders and pegs up onto the ridge with breathtaking views – Gran Vernel to the West, Cima Vernel to the south, the Cantennacio, Sassolungo and the Sella Massif in the distance
Close to the summit, the wire ends and there is another glacier section to climb to the summit
Here we find the highest refuge in the area and one of the smallest manned refuges with just 9 beds.
